So, after Lauren left, we got a call from our neighbor Michaela to see if we wanted to join them along with another set of friends in Lake Como (http://www.initaly.com/regions/lombardy/como.htm). That snapped me out of feeling so blue about Lauren. Ross and I said, "YES!" So, we left on Saturday, June 19th to get to a lovely apartment about 5 minutes from the lake!
The drive alone was like a vacation! The Alps are inspiring. They are so majestic, even Joel was speechless at times... although he may have been sleeping! We even drove through the Gotthard Pass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotthard_Pass). This is a super long tunnel right thought the Alps. It was crazy. When you drove into the pass everything was in German, when you came out everything was in Italian. In all honesty, it is a little trippy.
We drove through the Swiss town of Lugano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lugano,_Switzerland) located on Lake Lugano. It earns its name the Monte Carlo of Switzerland. The town is GORGEOUS! We drove by two Hermes stores. After all, one is not enough! The lake has the beautiful mountains that tower over it. It is impressive and I hope that Ross, Joel and I can go back and really check it out. Plus, there is a wonderful museum that caters to kids that I know that Joel would love! We just need to lure some family or friend to go back with us... any takers?
The drive to Lake Como was glorious. It was funny driving across the border to Italy. Everything in Switzerland is so perfect and pristine. The minute that we drove across the border, everything got a little bit more worn looking. We even drove by fountains that were not working. The Swiss would probably die. However, the cities were so pretty and quaint. Our apartment was on the far side of the lake so we drove through the city of Como, which was fantastic. The only thing that could have made our trip more exciting was seeing George Clooney.
We got to the apartment, dropped off all of our stuff and met our friends who we then walked to lunch with. We had a fantastic and cheap meal. Yes, Italy is so cheap! It was so fun to eat pizza and drink wine with new and old friends. Joel had so much fun playing with all the kids. After lunch, it was nap time. So we all hit the hay.
We woke up and headed into town to a cafe where we watched soccer and drank coffee. The kids ran around like banshees, but in Italy anything goes! It was great. We then walked around the lake until we found a great restaurant on the lake with a large garden that the kids could play in. We ordered tons of food drank and talked until late in the night. We took the babies home and put them in bed and then met at Step and Micks for more conversation and fun.
In the morning, we woke up to a very cold day. In fact, it was so cold that the mountains surrounding the lake were covered in fresh snow. Never the less, we took a long walk around the chopping and very cold lake. We then headed into town for a coffee. Due to the crummy weather, we decided to leave and have lunch in Lugano. What a great idea, but it just served to wet my appetite for wanting to really explore Lugano.
Ross and I would love to head back that way when people come to see us. It was such a great trip. Plus, we met some new and really great people. What a great weekend!
