We were so glad that Jay, Ross's cousin, came to visit us! He had business in Europe and he decided that it might be fun to swing by to see Basel. We were so happy to see him. We had an utter ball!
Jay arrived on Friday; we hung out in the garden. Jay was polite enough to choke down my less than delicious dinner. We stayed up and talked. We had so much fun! We opened several bottles of Alsace wine, which I think that Jay enjoyed as much as we did! It was a wonderful and amazing night! We found out that Zach had gotten his Eagle Award. Go Zach! We were so impressed by his major accomplishment.
On Saturday, we decided to head to Augusta Rorica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusta_Raurica). This was a great idea. The Roman Ruins are huge! We spent the entire day, exploring and enjoying the scenery. We learned all about Gladiators, a job that is not up my alley. We walked along the Rhine River and checked out the Roman Baths. We also laughed about how Germany was literally across the river. We marveled at the walls that were at least six feet thick. We had a great time checking out the farms that were nestled in and among the ruins. Joel was delighted to see several tractors, cows, pigs, and chickens. We even visited a petting zoo. It was the best!
We ate lunch at an adorable cafe adjacent to the Coliseum. While we were there, we met another family from America. The husband has a rare form of cancer and he is getting treatment in Basel. Needless to say, our thoughts and prayers are with them.
That evening, we headed home to watch soccer and eat pizza! It was a great ending for a marvelous day.
On Sunday, we woke up and we all went on a walk up the mountain. It was a nice walk and we checked out the cafe on the top of the mountain. Unfortunately, it was closed. But, the good news is that Joel was able to see another tractor and some storks. He had a ball. Ross and I had such a great time chatting with Jay. We were so sad when we came down the mountain since that would mean that he had to leave!
So, Jay left, which was sad, but he has promised to return. I hope that he is as good as his word!
On another note, Jay was fantastic; he sent Joel pictures of tractors! Joel and I have been looking at them non-stop. We are calling them "Jay's tractors." He really made our babies week! Jay, you rock!
