As Joel had Waldspiegel (Forest School), Ross, Oma, and Opa decided to do a day trip to the Alsace and leave Joel and Blair in Basel (3 hours of school and a 4 hour nap). We started at Haut Koenigsburg where Joel had been with Blair. This castle was crawling with tourists...but almost all of them were French! It was really a huge castle and had a great view. We really enjoyed the tour despite the crowd.
We then started to drive through the beautiful Alsacian villages. It really doesn't matter which one you pick as they are all beautiful and have amazing food. First stop for us was Ribauville. We picked out a great spot for Tarte Flambee (local version of pizza with creme freshe rather than tomato sauce). Half timber houses, flowers on every window, really beautiful.
Next was Riquewihr. This town is one long street uphill towards the vineyards. More beautiful houses and views and a great midevil city wall with half timber houses that have been built on top!
The last town of the day was Kaysersberg. This one had an old chateau that had crumbled just next to town and more of the same great feel, houses, etc. The best part here was we picked up some elcairs for desert. These were amazing. Bigger than the ones my family always enjoys in Ocean City, and maybe better. For anyone who visits us in Basel, your trip is not complete without visiting the Alsace!
