Our next jaunt was Bern. Blair and I had done Bern before but every time on a Sunday (including Ross's Europe trip 12 years prior). Just to be clear - everything in Switzerland is closed on Sunday so any town will feel dead. So we headed to Bern on a Saturday to shake things up. This was a fantastic decision yet again. Bern is really beautiful but it was also vibrant this day. We started at the bear pit and actually parked right next to it. We then worked our way into town and went to the Einstein museum where he lived in his time in Bern as a patent attorney and where he had his original ideas on the special theory of relativity. The museum is up 2 flights of tight stairs so we took turns...but as there is a 30 minute video in the our it turned out not to be time for Blair and Oma to do the tour. Sorry guys! We made our way to the glockenspiel and the ladies saw it go off on the hour (not overly impressive but you're there already). We ate in the coop restaurant which was pretty good and has a place for Joel to play which is nice. Plus we got some treats for the next day! We went to the capital building which is perfect looking (much like the entire town) and has great views over the river. Then to the cathedral where there was a neat kids fair in the garden overlooking the river. We made it back to the car and on the recommendation of our book, went to a furnicular just outside of downtown. At the top was an amazing park. It has a ~1/4 scale working steam locomotive. Joel and I (Ross) rode it. Joel had a blast! Plus there was a neat Ewok village type thing and a neat toy I've never seen with balls that was a bit rube goldberg machine-esque. It was great...we'll have to do that again with Joel.
